Who would have guessed that on the same weekend the Chargers signed Dwight Freeney, the Bolts-related story that got most of the attention on social media was the fashion choice of a 3rd-round draft pick who has yet to participate in one official practice with the team?
I became aware of Keenan Allen's headwear faux pas on Saturday morning when Brady Phelps of Lobshots.com tweeted out a photo that Allen had posted himself on social media. The response from Chargers fans ranged from pretty upset to downright vicious.
Now, there's certainly no positive way to spin this for Keenan Allen. It was a mistake, pure and simple. But Allen apologized for the infraction on Twitter, and vowed it would never happen again. Are we really worried that Allen is somehow a secret agent planted by the Raiders to bring the Chargers down from the inside?
We've all made wardrobe choices without thinking it all the way through. I'm inclined to believe that this is the case with Keenan Allen. It's either that, or the kid is determined to sabotage his own career from the get-go, which seems unlikely.
My advice? Let this one go, Chargers fans. (But keep the Raiders-hate, that's OK).
