CBS has had two crucial moments in their sports coverage this year. The first: Blackout at the Super Bowl. And second: The grotesque broken leg of Kevin Ware. CBS is 1-for-2 this year.
The blackout coverage has been widely criticised. Now its not as if you can prepare for that, but its live television and you are paid to be good, even off the cuff.
But I give major props to CBS for their coverage of Louisville gueard Kevin Ware's mangled leg. I believe that a gruesome injury should never be replayed. In minutes you can find it many places on the web. So if you want to see it again and again and again it is readily available. But out of respect to the injured player, friends and family watching at home it should not be shown. CBS had reaction shots of Ware's teammates that showed the travesty of the injury. And as expected Nantz and Kellogg were terrific letting the moment carry itself. Even minutes later when they went back to the studio at halftime the mood matched how we all felt, sickened.
Well done, CBS.
